A tragic incident unfolded at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill as a faculty member was fatally shot within a science building, reports AP News. The campus was enthralled in a lockdown as law enforcement launched a search for the shooter.

After a tense three-hour period, police apprehended the suspect, whose identity remains undisclosed pending charges. The science building, specifically Caudill Labs, became the center of the incident, prompting a swift and thorough response from authorities.

As details continue to emerge, the university has refrained from disclosing both the victim’s identity and any potential motives.

“This loss is devastating, and the shooting damages the trust and safety that we so often take for granted in our campus community,” Chancellor Kevin Guskiewicz said.

Emergency sirens blared shortly after a 911 call reported shots fired at the campus facility. UNC Police Chief Brian James confirmed a swift response. Students and staff took cover in dorms, offices, and classrooms.

The lockdown was lifted by 4:15 p.m. No additional injuries were disclosed.
