Trump Indicted in Federal Probe Over 2020 Election Reversal

August 2, 2023 | By Kali Girl

Former President Donald Trump faces an unprecedented indictment, accused of attempting to subvert the 2020 election’s will by clinging to power after his defeat, reports the Wall Street Journal.

The federal grand jury in Washington has charged Trump with four crimes, including conspiring to defraud the U.S., obstructing an official proceeding, and conspiring against voters’ rights, all tied to the January 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol by his supporters.

Special counsel Jack Smith brought forth this indictment, marking the second federal criminal case against Trump during President Biden’s administration.

As Trump eyes the 2024 GOP front-runner position, he could potentially face Biden as his rival once again.

“Despite having lost, the Defendant was determined to remain in power. So, for more than two months following election day on November 3, 2020, the Defendant spread lies that there had been outcome-determinative fraud in the election and that he had actually won. These claims were false, and the Defendant knew that they were false,” the indictment said.

The indictment casts a shadow of legal challenges over his campaign, with Smith’s office simultaneously prosecuting Trump on other counts related to the alleged retention of classified documents and obstruction at Mar-a-Lago resort.
