Tory Lanez, a Canadian rapper, was found guilty by a Los Angeles jury on Friday for shooting fellow artist Megan Thee Stallion in both of her feet during an argument about their personal and professional relationships in 2020. The incident, which sparked widespread speculation and discussion on social media and in music, resulted in Lanez being convicted of firing a weapon at Thee Stallion. According to the New York Times, the altercation took place after an argument between the two artists.

“The jury got it right. I am thankful there is justice for Meg,” Megan Thee Stallion’s attorney Alex Spiro .

Tory Lanez, has been found guilty on three felony charges, including assault with a semiautomatic handgun, carrying a loaded and unregistered firearm in a vehicle, and discharging a firearm with gross negligence. Lanez faces the possibility of over 20 years in prison and could be deported. During the trial, Lanez’s defense team suggested the possibility of another shooter, a friend of Megan Thee Stallion who was also present during the altercation.

However, Megan Thee Stallion took the stand and identified Lanez as her assailant, emotionally recounting the incident in which Lanez shouted “dance” and a sexist slur at her before firing several shots from the passenger seat of a SUV. She also shared that Lanez later apologized and offered her and a friend, Kelsey Harris, a million dollars each to remain silent about the incident.

During his closing argument, Alexander Bott, a deputy district attorney, claimed that Megan Thee Stallion’s criticism of Tory Lanez’s art had pushed the rapper over the edge, leading to the traumatic event. Bott pointed out that Stallion had been hesitant to come forward about the incident.

“Megan did find the courage to come and tell you what the defendant did to her,” Mr. Bott told jurors. “Was Megan telling the truth? I think everyone in the courtroom knows the answer to that question.”

She was also worried about her career. “I didn’t want to talk to the officers because I didn’t want to be a snitch,” the rapper added. “Snitching is frowned upon in the hip-hop community,” which she identified as a boys’ club.

Tory Lanez was arrested and initially charged with concealing a firearm in his vehicle after an incident involving Megan Thee Stallion. However, Megan Thee Stallion later came forward and stated that she had been shot, naming Lanez as her assailant. In October, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office charged Lanez with assault. Despite this, some people have questioned whether Megan Thee Stallion was actually shot, with a surgeon testifying in court about removing bullet fragments from both of her feet and presenting X-rays as evidence. Lanez, who chose not to testify in his own defense, has not given his version of events, but did release an album shortly after the incident in which he denied shooting Megan Thee Stallion, instead focusing on their personal relationship.

“We both know what happened that night and what I did/But it ain’t what they sayin’,” he rapped.

During her testimony, Megan Thee Stallion admitted to initially denying the extent of her relationship with Mr. Lanez, including in a TV interview with Gayle King. She explained that she lied because the thought of being physically intimate with someone who could potentially harm her was “disgusting.”
