Tory Lanez Fans Start Petition Calling for Appeal: ‘The Justice System Didn’t Give Him a Fair Chance’

A petition calling for the overturning of rapper Tory Lanez’s conviction is gaining support following a Los Angeles jury’s decision to find him guilty of shooting fellow rapper Megan Thee Stallion. Lanez, 30, was convicted of three felonies in the 2020 incident, which left Megan with bullet fragments in her feet and could result in a prison sentence of over 20 years for Lanez, reports ABC7.

As of Tuesday morning, a Change.org petition titled “Appeal Tory Lanez Verdict Immediately” has garnered over 37,000 signatures. The petition asserts that “a circus of speculation, insufficient evidence, inconsistencies, and drunken memories” has left many feeling “without much moral certainty of any truth.” A jury of seven women and five men recently convicted Lanez, whose legal name is Daystar Peterson, on three felonies: assault with a semiautomatic firearm, having a loaded, unregistered firearm in a vehicle, and discharging a firearm with gross negligence.

Jurors also agreed that there were aggravating factors in the attack, which means Lanez could face up to 22 years in prison and deportation when he is sentenced on January 25. Megan, whose legal name is Megan Pete, testified that Lanez fired a handgun at the back of her feet and shouted for her to dance as she walked away from an SUV in which they had been riding in the Hollywood Hills in the summer of 2020.

The petition’s creator, Yasin Toure’, writes in the description, ‘The state did not prove that Lanez undoubtedly committed any crime. Reasonable doubt loomed over a 10-day trial as the prosecution was unable to show us that there were not alternative explanations of the events. A circus of speculation, insufficient evidence, inconsistencies, and drunken memories left us without much moral certainty of any truth.”, reports Yahoo.

Many of the petition’s signatories have shared their thoughts on Change.org. “This is unfair to Daystar, appeal this immediately,” wrote one. “We can’t have another generational talent rot in prison over some bullsh*t allegations and corrupt led court decisions. There wasn’t enough evidence to have him convicted and if we fold it might happen to just anyone of us someday. #FreeTory.” Tory Lanez is set to be sentenced in January 2023, and it is currently unclear if his lawyers plan to appeal the verdict.
