Loneliness and isolation have been found to have a significant impact on individuals’ health, reports CNN. According to recent research, young adults who experience these feelings are more likely to suffer from sleep issues, inflammation, and immune changes.

In older individuals, loneliness and isolation can result in a range of symptoms, including pain, insomnia, depression, anxiety, and a shorter life expectancy.

However, the impact of social isolation is not limited to certain age groups. People of all ages who experience loneliness and isolation are at an increased risk of developing heart disease, stroke, diabetes, addiction, suicidal tendencies, self-harm, and dementia.

“In recent years, about one-in-two adults in America reported experiencing loneliness,” Surgeon General Vivek Murthy says in the advisory. “And that was before the COVID-19 pandemic cut off so many of us from friends, loved ones, and support systems.”

It is essential to note that social connection can play a significant role in mitigating these health problems.

According to a statement by Murthy’s office, social connection can act as a buffer to the negative health effects associated with loneliness and isolation. By fostering social connections, communities can become more resilient and better equipped to handle the challenges that arise from these issues.

According to a recent advisory, social connection is just as crucial to human beings as the necessities of food, water, and shelter. Throughout history, humans have relied on one another for survival, and even in modern times, our innate need for social interaction and physical closeness remains deeply ingrained.
