Soccer legend Pelé, who became the first global icon in the sport and won three World Cups, has passed away at the age of 82, according to CNN reports. Pelé’s daughter, Kely Nascimento, shared a touching message on Instagram, saying, “Everything that we are, is thanks to you… We love you infinitely. Rest in peace.” Pelé had been hospitalized in São Paulo for respiratory issues and complications related to colon cancer, and his health had declined as the cancer progressed.

He died on Thursday from multiple organ failure caused by the progression of colon cancer, according to a statement from Albert Einstein Hospital. Pelé’s legacy in soccer goes far beyond his impressive trophy haul and goal-scoring record, with his name becoming synonymous with the sport for over 60 years. Pelé famously said, “I was born to play football, just like Beethoven was born to write music and Michelangelo was born to paint.

Pelé’s incredible career in soccer began in 1958, when at just 17 years old, he made his World Cup debut and helped lead Brazil to victory. He scored a total of six goals in the tournament, including a hat-trick in the semifinals against France and two in the final against Sweden.

Despite battling cancer in recent years, Pelé’s impact on the sport has not been forgotten. In November 2022, as the World Cup was being held in Qatar, Pelé was hospitalized in Sao Paulo, prompting an outpouring of support from the soccer community.

The exact number of goals Pelé scored during his career is a point of debate, with some unofficial matches not included in his official tally of 767 goals recognized by Guinness World Records. However, there is no denying Pelé’s status as a global soccer superstar.

In an interview with The Talks online magazine, Pelé reflected on his career, saying “if I pass away one day, I am happy because I tried to do my best. My sport allowed me to do so much because it’s the biggest sport in the world.
