A high-ranking Nigerian politician, his wife, and another individual have been found guilty by a U.K. court of attempting to traffic organs, reports CBS News.

Ike Ekweremadu, a former deputy president of Nigeria’s senate, his wife Beatrice, and Dr. Obinna Obeta were convicted of exploiting a vulnerable victim for illegal organ harvesting after they brought a 21-year-old man from Lagos to the U.K.

According to the U.K.’s Crown Prosecution Service, the trio intended to harvest the man’s kidney for the Nigerian couple’s 25-year-old daughter, Sonia, who suffers from deteriorating kidneys.

According to CNN, in February 2022, the victim, who was a street trader, was trafficked to London and promised money and employment opportunities in the UK but was unaware of the true nature of the arrangement.

However, after a kidney screening, the victim was deemed unfit after learning he was not counseled on the risks of surgery and lacked the funds needed for after care.

Sonia was cleared of the charge of organ trafficking, but Sonia’s parents and their accomplice now face serious consequences for their actions.
