Super Bowl-winning running back Ronnie Hillman has passed away at the age of 31, according to a post from his family on his Instagram page, CNN reports. In August, Hillman had been diagnosed with renal medullary carcinoma, a rare and aggressive form of cancer that primarily affects people with the Sickle Cell trait.

He had undergone treatment, but it was not successful, and he entered hospice care. In an Instagram post, Hillman’s family announced his passing, saying he “quietly and peacefully transitioned today in the company of family and close friends.”

John David Wicker, the director of athletics at San Diego State University, where Hillman played college football, said in a statement that the school is “saddened” by his passing and offered condolences to his family.

Hillman spent time with the Minnesota Vikings and Los Angeles Chargers in 2016, before joining the Dallas Cowboys in 2017.
