Meta’s ‘Threads’: Rival App Aims to Take on Twitter

Meta is set to introduce a new app that bears a striking resemblance to Twitter, directly competing with Elon Musk’s social media platform, reports AP News.

The app, named Threads, recently surfaced on Apple’s App Store, hinting at a potential launch as early as Thursday. Screenshots showcased on the App Store reveal that Instagram users will have the ability to retain their usernames and continue following the same accounts on this fresh platform.

Elon Musk’s recent acquisition of Twitter for $44 billion has brought him a new set of troubles, and threads seem to be the latest headache. Musk’s controversial changes have unsettled advertisers and alienated users, with daily limits on tweet views being one of them.

Fortunately for those fed up with Musk’s alterations, Meta enters the scene with perfect timing.

According to social media consultant Matt Navarra, Twitter users are growing increasingly frustrated with Musk’s modifications.

Threads presents the “opportunity to jump to a platform that can give them many of the things that they want Twitter to continue to be that it no longer is,” he said.

Navarra added: “Allowing Instagram users to port their profile to Threads could give the new app more traction with potential users by providing a ready-made set of accounts for them to follow.”

However, potential users may be concerned about Meta’s history with data privacy, according to Navarra. Similar Twitter alternatives have faced difficulties in attracting user registrations.

“It’s hard to tell whether the upset and discontent is strong enough to make a mass exodus or whether it will be somewhat of a slow erosion,” Navarra said.
