Killer Mike Sounds Off: Free Speech Vital In Fight Against Prejudice

May 2, 2023 | By Kali Girl

Killer Mike, an advocate of free speech, critically argues that without it, discrimination and inequity will continue to plague society, reports Hip Hop DX. On Thursday, April 27, he took the stage at the 2023 Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression (FIRE) Gala, where he spoke in defense of American citizens’ First Amendment rights.

During his speech he gave his perspective on the dangers surrounding free speech.

“If we allow ourselves to express to one another our deepest and sometimes our darkest thinking’s, we will eventually hear one another. Burn off the fat of prejudice, of racial injustice, of misogyny, of phobias, and we will get to a place where we make a better, a more perfect union.”

He continued, “Right now, in this country, your freedom of speech is at risk,” he added. “The government has no right to limit your freedom of speech, your freedom of religion, your freedom to assemble.”

In a previous statement, Mike said, “If you don’t believe in freedom of speech for those people you don’t agree with, you don’t believe in freedom of speech at all.”

According to Congress.gov, categories that are not protected by the First Amendment include, obscenity, defamation, fraud, incitement, fighting words, true threats, speech integral to criminal conduct, and child pornography.
