Ja Morant, star point guard for the Memphis Grizzlies, has been accused of assault in a lawsuit filed in September according to TMZ Sports. The alleged incident occurred during a pickup basketball game at Morant’s home in Eads, Tennessee on July 26 reports the Bleacher Report.

According to the plaintiff, a 17-year-old male, Morant hit him “with a closed fist, knocking him to the ground” and then “continued sticking him while on the ground.” Morant’s childhood friend, Davonte Pack, is also named as a defendant in the suit.

The plaintiff claimed that the altercation began when he threw a basketball at Morant that accidentally hit him in the face, though Morant reportedly told police that the throw was intentional and that he was acting in self-defense after the plaintiff “began to approach him as if he wanted to fight.

Ja Morant, 23, who has already won Rookie of the Year and Most Improved Player awards in his young NBA career, told police that a teenager made verbal threats against him, including saying they would “light his house up.” The incident was investigated by police, but the district attorney ultimately declined to prosecute. Morant, who was named second-team All-NBA last season, is considered an MVP candidate for the 2022-23 season and is currently leading the Grizzlies to the second-best record in the Western Conference.
