According to the New York Times, Memphis Grizzlies’ guard, Ja Morant, was given an eight-game suspension without pay following his ‘detrimental’ conduct to the league. This comes after he was seen in an Instagram live video on March 4, visibly intoxicated and brandishing a firearm while partying at a nightclub in Denver.

Morant, 23, has not played since March 3 and the five games he’s already missed will be included in the suspension.

“Ja’s conduct was irresponsible, reckless and potentially very dangerous,” NBA Commissioner Adam Silver said in a statement. “It also has serious consequences given his enormous following and influence, particularly among young fans who look up to him. He has expressed sincere contrition and remorse for his behavior.”

After examining the video, the N.B.A. concluded that there was no evidence suggesting that Morant owned or brought a firearm to the club. In addition, there was no indication that he traveled with the weapon or brought it to an NBA facility.

Morant will be back to play in time for the Grizzlies’ upcoming game against the Dallas Mavericks on Monday.
