Politico reports Hunter Biden, son of President Joe Biden, has struck a deal with federal prosecutors to settle a long-running investigation into his unpaid federal taxes amounting to approximately $1 million and his 2018 acquisition of a handgun.

According to court documents filed on Tuesday in Delaware, Biden will plead guilty to two misdemeanor tax charges as part of the agreement. In addition, prosecutors initially charged him with the felony offense of possessing a firearm while using illegal substances. However, they have agreed to drop this charge if he successfully completes a two-year probationary period.

Hunter Biden, 53, is expected to avoid imprisonment as long as he adheres to the conditions of his release, according to sources. Pending the approval of a federal judge, a proposed agreement suggests that both parties will suggest probation as an appropriate measure.

The investigation, led by U.S. Attorney for Delaware David Weiss, received oversight from former President Donald Trump’s administration. Despite the transition of power to President Joe Biden, Weiss was allowed to continue his role to ensure the completion of the inquiry into the president’s son.

Both the White House and the Justice Department have maintained that they refrained from interfering with Weiss’ investigation.

“It is my understanding that the five-year investigation into Hunter is resolved,” Hunter Biden’s attorney Christopher Clark said in a statement. “I know Hunter believes it is important to take responsibility for these mistakes he made during a period of turmoil and addiction in his life. He looks forward to continuing his recovery and moving forward.”
