Hill Harper, actor and author, has announced his candidacy for the 2024 Senate race in Michigan, reports The New York Times. He plans to challenge Representative Elissa Slotkin, a moderate Democrat, and is expected to face intense competition in the closely watched Democratic primary.

Harper, known for his roles in “CSI: NY” and “The Good Doctor,” is focusing his campaign on expanding Social Security, improving access to affordable healthcare, addressing income inequality, and tackling student debt.

“It became clear to me that folks across Michigan don’t feel like they are being represented in Washington, D.C.,” he said, describing his conversations with people at farmers’ markets and union halls as he weighed his decision to run.”

“The state’s Democratic leadership, which holds the governor’s office and both chambers of the Michigan Statehouse, he added, has “done a lot to move the state forward, but Washington is still broken.”

Harper’s supporters see him, a Black progressive, as capable of uniting liberal and Black voters. His campaign may especially appeal to Black voters in a state where the issue of race and representation has been a top issue.

In the 2022 midterm election, Detroit, the largest majority Black city in the nation, experienced a significant absence of Black representation in Congress for the first time in years.

Harper intends to position himself as the most progressive candidate, aiming to engage disenchanted voters and unify the Democratic party.
