Harvard University President Claudine Gay steps down amid controversy surrounding her handling of antisemitism during the Israel-Hamas conflict and allegations of plagiarism in her academic writings, reports CBS News. The resignation comes just six months into her tenure, as announced in a letter addressed to the Harvard community.

After consulting with the Harvard Corporation, she said, “it has become clear that it is in the best interests of Harvard for me to resign so that our community can navigate this moment of extraordinary challenge with a focus on the institution rather than any individual.”

Republicans, including Rep. Elise Stefanik, called for her resignation, while some Harvard faculty members offered support. Gay also faced plagiarism allegations, prompting an investigation by the university.
