Iconic musician and civil rights activist Harry Belafonte, known for his deeply personal folk music and groundbreaking contributions to racial integration in the 1950s, passed away on Tuesday at the age of 96, report the NY Times.

Belafonte died at his residence in the Upper West Side of Manhattan due to congestive heart failure, confirmed his longtime spokesperson, Ken Sunshine.

During an era of widespread segregation and limited representation for Black individuals in the entertainment industry, Belafonte’s rise to the pinnacle of show business was revolutionary.

While not the first Black entertainer to break through racial barriers, he made an indelible impact, with his immense talent and charisma making him one of the most celebrated figures in music.

For a period, no other musician, regardless of race, could compete with Belafonte’s unparalleled success.
