David Ortiz was mistakenly targeted in a shooting while visiting the Dominican Republic. Ortiz, who is also known as “Big Papi,” was sharing a table at a bar with Sixto David Fernandez when he was shot. Unfortunately, the hitmen confused Fernandez with Ortiz, leading to the baseball legend being severely injured. He spent six weeks in a hospital in Boston, undergoing two surgeries.

Despite this incident, Ortiz remains a celebrated athlete. He was a 10-time All-Star and helped the Red Sox end their 86-year championship drought in 2004. In 2013, he batted .688 against the St. Louis Cardinals, earning the title of World Series MVP. After retiring in 2016, he was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in his first year of eligibility.

As for the perpetrators of the shooting, Dominican authorities have announced that the full sentence will be read on February 8, 2023.
