Dexter Scott King, the son of civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr., and a prominent figure in safeguarding his family’s legacy, has passed away at the age of 62 reports NBC News. His death, attributed to prostate cancer, occurred on Sunday in California.

Dexter, known for his resemblance to his iconic father, peacefully transitioned in his sleep at home in Malibu, as confirmed by his wife Leah Weber King.

“He gave it everything and battled this terrible disease until the end. As with all the challenges in his life, he faced this hurdle with bravery and might,” she said.

A graduate of Morehouse College, Dexter served as the chairman of the King Center, where he played a crucial role in preserving the family’s intellectual property. He also held the position of president of the King Estate.

Named after the Dexter Avenue Baptist Church in Montgomery, Alabama, where his father served as pastor, Dexter King carried on his family’s commitment to nonviolent social change. His mother, Coretta Scott King, passed away in 2006, followed by his sister Yolanda King in 2007.
