Defense Secretary Austin Battles Prostate Cancer and UTI

January 9, 2024 | By Kali Girl

Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin treated for prostate cancer, underwent surgery and later battled urinary tract infection, reports AP News. The doctors said he “underwent a minimally invasive surgical procedure” and went home the next day. But on Jan. 1 he reported nausea and severe abdominal, hip and leg pain due to the infection.

President Biden learned about the cancer diagnosis only on Tuesday, raising accountability questions amid eight days of secretive hospitalization at Walter Reed.

“Nobody at the White House knew that Secretary Austin had prostate cancer until this morning,” said John Kirby, the National Security Council spokesman. “And the president was informed immediately after.”

The cancer was detected during a routine screening in early December, with doctors stating it was caught early, and Austin’s prognosis is excellent.
