Cyberattack Targeted US Government Agencies, Says Officials

U.S. government networks recently faced a cyberattack impacting multiple federal agencies, according to Jen Easterly, Director of the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), reports ABC News. CISA, a division of the Department of Homeland Security, had previously detected a vulnerability in software security that is believed to have been exploited in this attack.

The cyber intrusion seems to have targeted an electronic file transfer application called MOVEit Transfer, as per one official. Mandiant, the cyber intelligence unit of Google Cloud, confirmed that government data was stolen in the attack. However, CISA officials refrained from disclosing the number of federal agencies affected or attributing the attack to any specific entity.

During a call with reporters, Easterly downplayed the severity of the attack, stating that it was not as destructive as the SolarWinds hack, which impacted government systems in 2020.

Bryan Vorndran, assistant director of the FBI’s cyber division said, “The FBI, alongside our partners at CISA, works diligently to share information in a timely manner to enable organizations to better protect themselves from malicious cyber actors.”

On Thursday a representative from MOVEit told ABC News that they are taking steps to ensure security.

“We have engaged with federal law enforcement and other agencies and are committed to playing a leading and collaborative role in the industry-wide effort to combat increasingly sophisticated and persistent cybercriminals intent on maliciously exploiting vulnerabilities in widely used software products,” the spokesperson said in a statement, in part.
