California to Cut Ties with Walgreens Over Abortion Pill Removal in 20 States

March 7, 2023 | By Kali Girl

On Friday, Walgreens has declared that it will no longer dispense abortion medication at its outlets in 20 states, reports Complex. In response, California Governor Gavin Newsom took a firm stance and declared that the state will no longer engage in business with the company.

Newsom tweeted, “California won’t be doing business with Walgreens—or any company that cowers to the extremists and puts women’s lives at risk,” Newsom tweeted on Monday. “We’re done.”

The impact of this decision on Walgreens currently remains uncertain. It’s also unclear if any other to be seen Democratic-governed states will adopt Governor Newsom’s approach.

On Friday CNN reported that Walgreens announced that it would not dispense mifepristone, one of the two drugs used in medicated abortion, in Republican-led 20 states. “We intend to be a certified pharmacy and will distribute Mifepristone only in those jurisdictions where it is legal and operationally feasible.”

Republican attorneys in 20 states, including states where mifepristone is still permitted, urged pharmacies to steer clear of distributing the pill. At least 19 jurisdictions have imposed restrictions on its use while 12 Democrat-led states have filed a lawsuit against the FDA, challenging the agency’s decision to impose restrictions on the distribution.

The complaint includes the states of Arizona, Washington, Illinois, Oregon, Connecticut, Delaware, Rhode Island, Michigan, Vermont, Nevada, New Mexico, and Colorado.
