CA Mandate: Bars & Clubs Must Provide ‘Roofie’ Safeguard Tests

January 11, 2024 | By Kali Girl

As the new year unfolds, California introduces a groundbreaking law designed to enhance safety during nights out on the town. ABC7 reports in the coming months, a majority of bars and nightclubs across the state will be mandated to provide customers with readily accessible drug testing kits.

Assemblymember Josh Lowenthal, D-Long Beach, who introduced AB 1013 early last year said, “We have a crisis that’s taking place that’s resulting in sexual assault, that’s targeting primarily women and members of the LGBTQ communities.”

These kits, often featuring strips, stickers, or straws, are equipped to detect prevalent date-rape drugs such as ketamine or GHB. The responsibility falls on bar owners to ensure these tests are available starting in July, with the option to decide whether to charge customers for this added precaution.
