Blinken Raises Concerns of China’s Possible Lethal Support

On Saturday, Secretary of State Antony Blinken made a statement regarding China’s actions, as reported by Politico. Blinken stated that China has made “no apology” for their recent deployment of a spy balloon over the United States.

“This was an opportunity to speak very clearly and very directly about the fact that China sent a surveillance balloon over our territory, violating our sovereignty, violating international law. And I told him quite simply that that was unacceptable and can never happen again,” Blinken added.

Additionally, the Biden administration is troubled and has expressed “very real concerns” that China may be considering offering material support to Russia’s ongoing military operations in Ukraine.

“To date, we have seen Chinese companies and of course, in China provide non-lethal support to Russia for use in Ukraine. The concern that we have now is based on information we have that they’re considering providing lethal support,” Blinken said.

Blinken characterized the U.S. relationship with China as “competitive” and “among the most consequential but also complex relationships that we have,” adding that “we have a strong interest in trying to manage the relationship responsibly, and to make sure, to the best of our ability, that competition doesn’t veer into conflict or into cold war.”
