Amazon To Cut 9K Jobs, Including Twitch Layoffs

According to Variety, Amazon’s CEO Andy Jassy, is planning to lay off an additional 9,000 employees, in addition to the 18,000 job cuts that were previously announced. The layoffs will primarily impact employees in divisions such as Amazon Web Services (AWS), People, Experience and Technology (PXT), advertising and Twitch. Final decisions on which positions will be affected are expected to be made by the senior management team by “mid to late April.”

“This was a difficult decision, but one that we think is best for the company long term,” Jassy wrote.

He cited economic “uncertainty” as the driving force behind the company’s latest round of layoffs. This decision comes after several years of significant growth in Amazon’s headcount.

As of December 31, 2022, the ecommerce behemoth boasted approximately 1.541 million full-time and part-time employees, representing a nearly 19% increase from the previous year’s count of approximately 1.298 million.

“For several years leading up to this one, most of our businesses added a significant amount of headcount,” Jassy wrote in the memo, which Amazon shared publicly. “This made sense given what was happening in our businesses and the economy as a whole. However, given the uncertain economy in which we reside, and the uncertainty that exists in the near future, we have chosen to be more streamlined in our costs and headcount.”

In a memo to employees, Jassy wrote, “To those ultimately impacted by these reductions, I want to thank you for the work you have done on behalf of customers and the company. It’s never easy to say goodbye to our teammates, and you will be missed. To those who will continue with us, I look forward to partnering with you as we make life easier for customers every day and relentlessly inventing to do so.”
